Today, 2/3 of the population is overweight or they are not mindful of what they put in their bodies. Trying to correct this problem is not easy but it is possible. The biggest obstacle is knowing where to start and what to do! It's time to pay attention.
When asked what are some easy ways to loose weight, I usually suggest people first look at their diet.
What are you drinking?
What are you eating for meals?
What are you snacking on?
The best way to determine this is by writing down or being conscious of everything that goes into your mouth!
Try it for three days to a week! Most people are surprised by what they really eat compared to what they think they eat.
What are you drinking?
Chemical water? Yes I mean the Crystal Lites, sodas, diet sodas, flavored waters, and Cool Aids. But not only that, consuming too much juice or juice *censormode*tails (juices that contain high fructose corn syrup) are unhealthy for the body too. And then we have the people who live on coffee or tea. Any of these things can be too much for the body and a contributor to weight gain. The best thing to drink is pure clean water! And yes, eight glasses a day (for some more). But try and do this between meals not with your meals.
What are you eating for meals?
This is such an issue for so many people. Most people don't have time to fix their own foods and don't know how to choose better foods when allowing someone else to fix them. First thing to do is try and purchase foods without artificial sugars, flavors or colors, no high fructose corn syrup, and no trans fats (hydrogenated oils or partially hydrogenated oils). This alone can dramatically make a difference in weight loss!!! Next, look to see that fresh foods are in the diet, meaning fruits and veggies DAILY. Even if you are going to fast food restaurants, choose fresh foods to eat. There are many choices, you just have to get use to looking for them. If you are eating breads or biscuits, don't eat white or wheat, eat whole grain! If you eat meats (beef, pork, poultry, fish) don't eat luncheon meats, sausages, bologna, salt curred meats or fried meats. In other words, try not to eat processed foods.
What are you snacking on?
Many people choose poor snack foods. Convenience is a huge issue but if you are constantly snacking on junk foods (chips, cookies, candy bars, and yes most protein bars) you are doing yourself no favor. I would also like to point out that just because a snack food says organic, it doesn't mean you can over consume it and do the body good.
Try snacking on fresh fruits, veggies or nuts (non salted and not too many).
The next dilemma I get in weight loss is exercise ...I can't tell you how many times I hear people say they just don't have time or the finances to go to a gym. If you watch TV 20 -30 minutes a day, you have found your time.
You don't have to go overboard to exercise. Yoga, pilates, dance or sports are some fun alternatives. If you just have time for exercise at home, walk around the block (as briskly as possible), do squats, dips, push ups, sit ups or any simple movements. There are many ways to exercise. The key is to find something you like to do and be consistent with it. And don't stop trying until you find it.
It is easy to sit back and become one of the 2/3 overweight population, but it is more rewarding and makes life far more enjoyable to feel good and be healthy! You can do it. Movement and healthy eating are good for the body and mind. So get moving be healthy and enjoy life!
On February 4, 2010, Senators John McCain and Byron Dorgan introduced S. 3002, the "Dietary Supplement Safety Act."
This legislation would mandate that every dietary supplement would have to go through a brand new process of government review in order to stay on the market.
If this bill becomes law your health care choices will be drastically reduced, and many of the supplements available today will become illegal. This and other provisions of this misguided legislation affect ALL dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, herbs, sports, and diet products.
The supposed purpose of the bill is to make dietary supplements "safer," which is ironic because dietary supplements already have an excellent safety record. It also ignores the fact that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration already have the powers they need to police the market.
Click here to send a note in opposition to S. 3002 directly to your two Senators or use the information on the website to write a personal letter. Either way, you need to act immediately. Do not let Congress take away your right to dietary supplements.
Are you Diabetic? Is your pancreas failing to do its job? Do you think you are helping your body out by consuming a sweetener that is made from sugar but is not absorbed like sugar? Are you feeling splendid about the NEW chemical sweetener SPLENDA! You might not after reading these findings.
There is no question that sucralose or splenda starts off as a sugar molecule, however, sucralose is a synthetic chemical that was originally cooked up in a laboratory. In the five step patented process of making sucralose, three chlorine molecules are added to a sucrose or sugar molecule. The chemical process to make sucralose alters the chemical composition of the sugar converting it to a fructo-galactose molecule. This type of sugar molecule does not occur in nature and therefore your body does not possess the ability to properly metabolize it.
Sounds exciting…! Your body doesn’t recognize it as a calorie. NO weight gain, NO blood sugar increase. Hold on, what does your body do with it?
Dr. Jim Bowen reported that chlorocarbons and sucralose are significantly absorbed from the digestive tract. If you look at the research primarily from animal studies, you will see that in fact 15% of sucralose is absorbed into the digestive system and ultimately stored in the body. To reach a number such as 15% means some digestive systems absorb more and some absorb less. In one human study, one of the eight participants did not excrete any sucralose even after 3 days. Clearly his body was absorbing this chemical.
What happens when sucralose, a chlorocarbon, known for causing organ, genetic and reproductive damages is consumed at even less than FDA demanded test levels? An astonishing 40% shrinkage of the thymus gland, the master immune system gland as well as, swelling of the liver and kidneys, and calcification of the kidneys.
It is coming up to the cold and flu season again. Are you someone who tends to catch everything coming around? Do you notice your throat hurting or feeling raw? How much artificial sweetener splenda do you consume?
There must be more to this.
Four sweeteners (sodium cyclamate, saccharin, sodium saccharin, and sucralose) also induced DNA damage in gastrointestinal organs. Based on these results, we believe that more extensive assessment of food additives in current use is warranted.
As of 2005, only six human trials have been conducted on Splenda (sucralose). Of these six trials, only two of the trials were completed and published before the FDA approved sucralose for human consumption. The two published trials had a grand total of 36 total human subjects and only 23 of these people were actually given sucralose. There have been no long-term human toxicity studies published until after the FDA approved sucralose for human consumption. Following FDA approval a human toxicity trial was conducted, but lasted only three months, hardly the length of time most Splenda users plan to consume sucralose. No studies have ever been done on children or pregnant women.
If you look at the research (which is primarily extrapolated form animal studies) you will see that in fact 15% of sucralose is absorbed into your digestive system and ultimately is stored in your body. To reach a number such as 15% means some people absorb more and some people absorb less. In one human study, one of the eight participants did not excrete any sucralose even after 3 days. Clearly his body was absorbing and metabolizing this chemical. That is what our bodies are supposed to do.
Nutritionals makes it's claim that Splenda is not digested or metabolized by the body, making it have zero calories.
Scientists have used embryonic stem cells to generate blood -- a feat that could eventually lead to endless supplies of type O-negative blood, a rare blood type prized by doctors for its versatility.
"We literally generated whole tubes in the lab, from scratch," said Robert Lanza, chief science officer at Advanced Cell Technologies.
People usually require blood transfusions that match their own blood type: A mismatch can be fatal. Type O-negative can be safely transferred into anyone, but is only possessed by about 7 percent of the population, leaving supplies perpetually short.
The new technique, devised by Lanza and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic and University of Illinois, is still preliminary. Its safety hasn't yet been proved in animals, much less humans.
But because blood cells are short-lived and cannot divide, there's reason to believe that stem cell-derived blood cells could pose fewer complications than other therapeutic stem cells, which can divide unpredictably.
"The beautiful thing is that you start with one line, expand them indefinitely and generate as many as you want," said Lanza. "It's a literally inexhaustible source of cells for therapy."
Lanza's team allowed a small culture of embryonic stem cells -- naturally capable of becoming any other type of tissue in the body -- to divide until it numbered a few billion cells. These they treated with a chemical *censormode*tail that coaxed the cells into whatever type they wanted: A, B or O. If they'd started with a type O-negative line, said Lanza, they could just as easily have made that, too.
